In India, access to sustainable alternatives for individuals from underserved communities continues to be a challenge. India generates around 3.4 million metric tons of plastic waste every year, and a large proportion of this comes from households. This waste affects low income communities disproportionately and worsens existing environmental and health issues faced by these individuals. The lack of access to alternatives faced by these communities arises due to a combination of factors — higher cost, limited availability, and lack of awareness about the same.
Sustainable products like biodegradable plastics, bamboo products, and recycled products are more expensive and not available in local markets, and are therefore not likely to be employed for daily use. There is also a knowledge gap as individuals from underserved communities may not have adequate information about the benefits and applications of eco-friendly alternatives. To address these issues, there is a need for widespread distribution of eco-friendly alternatives along with educational resources to raise informational awareness. Through the distribution of eco-friendly, sustainable alternatives accompanied by factsheets on more scientific conservation, podcasts and webinars on using alternative materials in daily functions, Under WRAPS strives to employ a comprehensive approach to sustainability with a focus on alternative materials.
